A century ago, Orion Mason wrote a Medway history handbook covering the
years 1713-1913, noting in a reporter's terse style town events from war
efforts to wedding anniversaries. With the approach of Medway's 300th
birthday, a team of Medway Historical Society members were inspired to
follow Mason's path and create a similar historical timeline, from 1914
to 2013. Authors note town and school growth in size and complexity,
weather from drought to spectacular snowfalls, and the usual and unusual
events of Medway daily life, all culled from town reports and local
newspapers. To provide a broader background, Mason's 1713-1913
chronology has been reproduced in an easily readable format. And with
it, there is Francis Donovan's 'Old Medway Locations', which provides
the history behind many almost-forgotten places.
A former Medway resident writes:
“I sat down with the book immediately and was lost for an
hour, and since then I think I have read most of it. It is the first time,
really, that I have learned anything substantive about the history of Medway.
There are names and places I did not know – Rabbit Hill and Chicken Brook.
There were places that had changed... And I learned more about places I thought
I knew well, like West Medway Park and the Village Church. It was surprising to
read about so many fires and about the moonshine...”

Welcome to Franklin, Massachusetts, a town that
to a casual visitor might appear to be nothing more than an 'ordinary' Greater
Boston suburb; maybe even the kind of place where, "Nothing much ever
happens." But don't be fooled. This is the entirely true story of how one
town transformed from a small hamlet--a church precinct in a frontier community
-- into one of the fastest growing communities in America, an 'edge city' built
around an interstate. It's a story of religious extremists, farmers,
factory workers, entrepreneurs, anarchists, and eccentrics. It's a story more
than 300 years in the making and it has never been told before in one
book...until now.
"I finished reading the book about Franklin on
Sunday. It is wonderful and insightful!
Eamon McCarthy Earls did a wonderful job in gathering the facts. I have lived
in Franklin for 26 years and there was so much that I had not known about our
town until now. I recommend this book to all Franklin residents and anyone
interested in this community.
My compliments to the author. His
attention to detail made this journey through the centuries of Franklin's
history a wonderful and fulfilling ride."

From
1895 to 1908, one of the largest civil engineering projects in New
England history transformed four Massachusetts towns (Clinton, Sterling,
Boylston, and West Boylston) creating Boston's first truly modern water
supply system -- the Wachusett Reservoir and aqueduct. This book, for
the first time, tells the story of this engineering marvel as well the
human dramas of the project: strikes, murders, and the deaths of more
than 30 workers.
